Western Power PI User group

The Western Power PI User group held an event about the current and future use of the OSIsoft PI suite as a catalyst for driving business benefits from Operational Data. Rudy Bake, Development Manager in Network Operations, and a long-standing advocate of innovative use of data in Western Power got together a diverse group of across Network Operations, Asset Performance, ICT and Business Intelligence and Data Analytics.

As an innovation partner for Western Power, Andrew McDonald and Tony Watkins of Optimate were asked alongside OSIsoft to shed some light on the technology behind the Digital Substation initiative, which is a flagship project under Western Power’s Digital Transformation program. This sparked an animated discussion about subsequent initiatives that will require groundbreaking integration of asset, financial and SCADA data sources and is likely to reach into cloud technologies like AWS or Azure Databricks.

Andrew Patterson and Joel Halpin of OSIsoft continued with a very coherent overview of the latest developments in the PI suite, and it’s integration capabilities. From the latest PI World conference, Joel demonstrated an excellent case study in the Power Transmission and Distribution domain around real-time line capacity management based on weather modelling.

Finally, Francois Mevis from Optimate discussed common fail factors that frustrate the realisation of benefits from the data analytical software investment. Based on his experience as IT and analytics leader in Synergy and Shell he provided a practical approach to combat bad data quality, low user adoption and inability to scale analytical models.
